"A Hunter's Paradise"
Be careful driving at night through McCulloch County, Texas.
This typical chunk of Texas Hill Country terrain is home to thousands of whitetail deer.
The locals will advise you to be on guard at night, and drive slowly, especially if it's
been dry. The deer will come to the roadside in search of green forage.
Once experiencing this magnificent sight, one will begin to
understand just how many deer live in the carefully managed habitats of McCulloch County.
Brady is the county seat and principal town of this rural area. Sheep, goats and other
livestock are the primary crops, and they coexist remarkably well with deer populations.
Hunters come here in droves to help harvest and manage deer
populations. They are so plentiful that food supplies would become very scarce if some
were not harvested each deer season. The Texas season runs from the first weekend in
November until the first weekend in January.
Of course, many other game species can be found in McCulloch County
as well. Abundant populations of wild turkey, quail and dove are hunted in season. Local
ranchers manage for optimum wildlife habitat, and hunting leases are an important income
for them.
One such ranch is the historic
Ford Ranch, which has a long history of trophy bucks and quality deer. The Ford Ranch
lies on 33,000 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country. It was here that the world record
non-typical whitetail deer was brought down, way back in 1892. This monster had a 78-point
rack. The record has stood for more than 100 years.
