Citizenship
Seminar
The 2005 seminar is set for June 13-17
Contact your county Farm Bureau or Tad Duncan for applications.
Deadline for applications is May 2.
Since
1963, more than 13,000 high school juniors and seniors have attended the annual
Texas Farm Bureau Citizenship Seminar each summer.
The purpose of the training school is to give selected high school students in Texas a better understanding of the various forms of government and their responsibilities as citizens. Comparisons of the different kinds of economic systems are outlined.
The seminars were held for the first three years on the
campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. From 1966 through 1982,
the annual summer training sessions were conducted at Baylor University in
Waco. In 1983, the seminar was moved to Angelo State University in San Angelo,
where it has been conducted ever since, with the exception of 1992 when it
was held again at Baylor.
Students are selected by county Farm Bureaus with the cooperation of local school officials. Transportation, rooms, meals and a small tuition fee are financed by the sponsoring county Farm Bureaus, sometimes with cooperation of local service clubs.
The seminar runs three full days and includes lectures, discussions, and films by outstanding authorities in government, history, and economics. Recreation is also provided.
Students are encouraged to meet with school and civic groups upon their return home to share the information and knowledge they have received.
Students may also participate in the Free Enterprise Speech Contest, in which scholarships are awarded.
