Lesson Plan
How Does My Garden Grow?

1.

Introduce new vocabulary:
Grades 1-3: Vegetable, Garden, Seed, Fertilizer
Grades 4-6: Fertilizer

2. Visit www.arnprior.com/kidsgarden/index.htm for kids gardening ideas.
3. Have a class discussion to brainstorm plans about the garden, where to establish the garden and if containers should be used.
4. Decide what vegetables will be planted and which student will be planting. Put all of this information on a chart and keep it in the classroom.
5. On the day of the planting, wear appropriate clothing, have tools, seeds, and plants as needed.
6. Water daily at first, then as needed.

Extension
Keep a plant diary. Chart the growth, temperature, rainfall, and when plants begin to flower and fruit.

For math, measure the growth of each plant. Also, calculate the area and perimeter of the garden.

Read Little House in the Big Woods, which explains the need for a large garden in pioneer times.

Plan a trip to a Living History farm to observe large gardens and their daily use.

When vegetables are ready to harvest, plan to cook vegetable soup. Have the students harvest, wash, and prepare the vegetables.

Write a composition comparing and contrasting planting a garden and field crops.
