Introduce new vocabulary:
Grades 1-3: Vegetable, Garden, Seed, Fertilizer

Have a class discussion to
brainstorm plans about the garden, where to establish the garden
and if containers should be used.

Decide what vegetables will
be planted and which student will be planting. Put all of this information
on a chart and keep it in the classroom.

On the day of the planting,
wear appropriate clothing, have tools, seeds, and plants as needed.

Water daily at first, then
as needed.

Extension
Keep a plant diary. Chart the growth, temperature, rainfall, and when
plants begin to flower and fruit.
For math, measure the growth of each plant. Also, calculate the area and
perimeter of the garden.
Read Little House in the Big Woods, which explains the need for
a large garden in pioneer times.
Plan a trip to a Living History farm to observe large gardens and their
daily use.
When vegetables are ready to harvest, plan to cook vegetable soup. Have
the students harvest, wash, and prepare the vegetables.
Write a composition comparing and contrasting planting a garden and field
crops.
