Food Check-Out Week
County Farm Bureaus across the Lone Star State teamed together the first week of February to ring in Food Check-Out Week, the time of year it takes for the average American household to earn enough income to afford a year's worth of food.
According to national statistics, most families had made enough in just 34 days this year (Feb. 6) to cover their annual allotment of edibles. By contrast, they'll work 77 days to cover their share of income taxes.
Despite this landmark testament to the affordability of American food, farmers see only a fraction of those dollars. Just 22 cents of every dollar spent on food finds its way to the farmer's wallet, yet Americans enjoy the safest, most abundant food supply in the world.
Brazos CFB bought groceries for five families during their observance of Food Check-Out Week.
