The top 12 hard winter wheat varieties accounted for 49.1 percent
of Texas 2000 winter wheat plantings, according to the Texas Agricultural
Statistics Service.
Each of these varieties represented more than 2 percent of the total planted
wheat acreage in Texas. All hard winter wheat varieties accounted for
85.7 percent of the planted wheat acreage in Texas for crop year 2000.
In 1990, hard winter wheat varieties accounted for 81.8 percent of the
states wheat acreage.
As in 1990, TAM 105 was the top variety planted in the state with 484,000
acres (8.1 percent). In 1990, TAM 105 accounted for 11.1 percent of the
planted acres. TAM 202 replaced TAM 101 in the number two spot this year,
accounting for 5.3 percent of the planted acreage with 319,500 acres.
Longhorn debuted in the number three spot, accounting for 5.3 percent
of the acreage with 316,900 acres. TAM W-101 slipped to the fourth spot
with 272,100 acres, 4.5 percent of the total acreage.
Soft winter wheat accounted for 7.9 percent of Texas total planted
wheat acres, up slightly from 7.4 percent in 1990. The top soft winter
wheat variety was Pioneer 2571, with 1.1 percent of the total, at 68,500
acres. Coker 9663 was the second top winter wheat variety with 1 percent
of the acreage, at 58,000 acres. Number three was Pioneer 2548, accounting
for .5 percent of the state acreage, at 32,300 acres.
Norm was the only published variety of hard spring wheat reported, with
.5 percent of total planted acres. Only .6 percent of Texas wheat acres
were planted to hard spring varieties.
This survey was conducted by the Texas Agricultural Statistics Service
through funding from the Texas Wheat Producers Association. They were
assisted in the effort by the Texas wheat industry and the Texas Cooperative
Extension.
