By Bryce Myrick Historically, grains are at their yearly low price close to harvest time. As the year ends, watch as Year 2000 crops are sold, taking grains out of the hands of producers. With grains in the control of commercials, we should have a winter increase in grain prices. Now is the time to develop a sound marketing plan for 2001. How and when will you market your 2001 crops? Producers need to be gathering marketing information. Should we use Cash Forward Contracts? Should we hedge our positions using the Futures and Options Markets and when do we "pull the trigger?" February, March, and April may give you some good opportunities to market next year's grains before you ever plant a seed. Try to take advantage of good prices while reducing your risk. Two of your goals should be not to see low harvest prices and not have sold any grains.
