National Food Check-Out Day activities were held by 50 County Farm
Bureaus across the state Feb. 7. Food Check-Out Day, the 38th day of 2001,
commemorated the day Americans would have earned enough income to pay
for their yearly food supply.
Bell County President Vince Cortese talks with a customer at Smith's Brothers
Grocery in Belton about how farmers and ranchers contribute to the affordability
of food in the United States. Food and cash donations totaling more than
$800 went to the Ronald McDonald House of Temple. The Ronald McDonald
program provides food and shelter for the families of critically ill children
during hospital stays.
In Hill County, the donations collected went to Hillsboro Interfaith Ministries,
a community food pantry that distributes food to needy families. Playing
a role in the effort were (left to right) Eddie Ray Schulz, a Hill County
FB board member; Milton Peterson, Hill County FB president; Brian Burks,
Brookshire Brothers manager; and Blair Russell, Hill County FB vice president.

Hidalgo, Willacy, and Cameron counties collected and donated to the local
Ronald McDonald House about $1,500 of non-perishable food and gift certificates
to the local Ronald McDonald House through Food Checkout Day activities
at Albertson's. Pictured are: (l-r) Joe Murphy, Cameron County; Les Smith,
