Texas Farm Bureau offers youths a variety of scholarship opportunities. The following are just a few of this year's state winners. TFB, along with county Farm Bureaus, offer more than $150,000 in scholarships each year. Youth Foundation For the first time, the Texas Farm Bureau Youth Foundation has awarded two scholarships instead of one to youths for the Fall 2001 school year. This year's winners are Mark Andrew Glover of Gorman and Laura Ann Hejl of Abbott. Glover, son of David and Linda Glover of Gorman, plans to use his scholarship at Texas Tech University, majoring in pre-med in order to become a doctor. Laura Hejl, daughter of Willie and Susie Hejl of Abbott, plans to attend Baylor University, with the goal of becoming a bioinformatics scientist. YF&R Scholarship The Texas Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher committee recently awarded four $2000 scholarships, on a $500 per semester basis, to college agriculture majors. The four recipients are: Joshua Light of Olton; Jeffrey A. Miles of Valley Mills; Jerret Allan Wilbourn of Abbott; and Holly Englert of Norton. Light, the son of Jonathan Light and Jana Light, plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in animal science, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. Miles, the son of Larry D. Miles and Jenny C. Miles, will attend Texas A&M University. He plans to major in international agriculture commerce and pursue a career as an international ag consultant. Wilbourn, the son of Mary Ann Wilbourn and the late Jerry Wilbourn of Abbott, plans to major in agronomy at Texas A&M University and enter a career in farming and ranching. Englert, the daughter of Robert and Rose Marie Englert of Norton, will pursue a degree in agricultural communications from Texas Tech University. Englert hopes to put her degree to use as a lobbyist working for agriculture and rural interests. Dick Mitchell Scholarship Kit Jason Machen of Lampasas edged out nine finalists selected from a field of 63 applicants to win the 2001 Dick Mitchell Scholarship. Machen is the son of Janet Machen of Lampasas and the late Neil Machen, who was a past Lampasas County FB president. He plans to attend Tarleton State University and major in Agribusiness or Business.
