'Listening sessions' set on risk
management for pasture, rangeland

Pasture and rangeland producers are invited to a "listening session" pertaining to the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000, set for March 22 at the Texas A&M University Beef Center, G. Rollie White Visitors Center, College Station.

The meeting, which begins at 1 p.m., is to be conducted by USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA) and AgriLogic, a recognized leader in analyzing the financial ramifications of farm policy, risk management, and crop insurance programs on government outlays, commodity markets, financial institution portfolios, and producer profitability.

The 2000 amendment to the Federal Crop Insurance Act required RMA to develop a risk management program for pasture and rangeland. Producer input is vital to developing an effective and efficient risk management program for America's producers. A vital component for program development is to design a concept that is cost effective and will meet the needs of producers.

During the fall of 2001, producer listening sessions were held throughout the United States to gather producer input on pasture and rangeland perils and risk management needs. Utilizing this producer input and the information gathered through extensive research, AgriLogic has developed risk management concepts for covering forage loss occurring in pastures and rangelands. Once the concepts have been designed, RMA and AgriLogic believe it is imperative to receive producers' comments on the proposed program concepts.
