Day set for June 11

 

Central Texas producers will want to mark their calendars for the June 11 Tri-County/IMPACT Field Tour, featuring the latest in corn hybrid research, conservation tillage systems and other techniques that can be applied to current operations.

The event is free, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. at the Texas A&M University farm service headquarters, located one mile west of the Brazos River on F.M. 60.

Three Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered to field day participants; officials are anticipating offering three Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) CEUs.

The field tour will showcase research and field work going on at the Intensive Management Precision Agriculture Conservation Tillage center (IMPACT). The tour begins at 9:30 a.m., with "Corn Hybrid Testing" research, led by Dr. Javier Betran, assistant professor and corn breeder with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, along with Dennis Pietsch, Experiment Station research associate.

The next stop will feature "Management of Volunteers in Transgenic Crops" led by Dr. Paul Baumann, Extension weed specialist. At 10:30 a.m., "Best Management Practices for Preventing Atrazine Runoff" will be presented by Dr. Monte Dozier, Extension soil and crop specialist. It will be followed by "Soybean Varieties and Planting Dates," led by Dr. Arlen Klosterboer, Extension agronomist.

The last tour stop will be "Conservation Tillage Systems" led by Dr. Robert Lemon, Extension state cotton specialist. "Cotton and Fleahopper Trapping Program" will also be held at the same time, featuring Dr. Charles P. Spurgeon and Dr. Charles P. Suh, USDA research entomologists.

During the lunch hour, David Gibson, executive director of the Texas Corn Producers Board, will present "An Overview of Texas Corn Board Activities." This will be followed by segments on precision agriculture, featuring Dr. Steve Searcy, Experiment Station agricultural engineering researcher; Dr. Mark McFarland, Extension soil fertility specialist, discussing phosphorus fertility; and an overview of the Texas A&M University System corn breeding program, led by Betran.
