A two-year leadership development program that focuses on improving personal and professional leadership skills for producers ages 25 to 40 is now seeking applicants. Sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau, the Agricultural Leadership Enhancement and Development Program, called AgLead, prepares individuals for leadership roles in an almost endless variety of situations. "AgLead will prepare you for almost any leadership role that you have in mind, whether it is serving on our State Farm Bureau Board of Directors or as president of your local school board," said program coordinator Si Cook. "It offers an unparalleled opportunity to become the most informed and competent leader that you can be. Each person has specific talents. AgLead strengthens those talents you already possess, and strives to improve areas of weakness." The two-year program, which begins in November at the state headquarters in Waco, involves nine separate meetings held in different locations across the state and nation. Five of the meetings are held in Texas; three are held out of state in California, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Ill.; and one international trip is scheduled. Past AgLead groups have traveled internationally to Brazil, Canada, Argentina and Chile. Cook said each meeting provides class members the opportunity to view and learn about the latest agricultural techniques and technologies. Agriculture is viewed from the farm to the factory, and some of the most diversified and innovative ag operations in the nation will be visited. Participants also gain an understanding of the political and regulatory process through face-to-face meetings with decision makers in both Washington and Austin. Time is spent learning about the state and national political processes, and how to influence them. Communication skills are also developed through the program. Training is provided to improve verbal, written and media relations skills, as well as instruction in conducting meetings and proper parliamentary procedure. Eligible candidates must between the ages of 25 and 40; must derive a major portion of their income from production agriculture; and must be a member of Texas Farm Bureau. Applicants should solicit financial support ($500 minimum a year for two years) from their county Farm Bureau. Participants must also contribute $500 a year minimum for two years.
