A shiny new Dodge Ram 3/4-ton Quad Cab pickup with a Cummins diesel engine awaits the winner of Texas Farm Bureau's Outstanding Young Farmer & Rancher contestone of three great contests the state organization offers for young agricultural producers. The three conteststhe Outstanding Young Farmer & Rancher Contest, the Discussion Meet Contest, and the Excellence in Agriculture Awardoffer a host of great prize packages and recognition for TFB members 35-years-old and younger. State winners for all three contests will be named at the Texas Farm Bureau annual convention in Corpus Christi Dec. 8-11.
Outstanding YF&R ContestThe Outstanding Young Farmer & Rancher Contest is designed to identify, recognize and reward exceptional young ag producers across the state. Producers are asked to detail their operations, leadership activities, goals and plans for the future. Three finalists are chosen from 13 district winners. On-farm visits are conducted by a panel of judges to determine the winner. The Outstanding YF&R winner receives title to a 2003 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton 4X4 Quad Cab pickup with Cummins diesel engine, courtesy of Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Co.; 150 hours use of a Case IH tractor (40 PTO horsepower up to 155 PTO horsepower tractor two-wheel drive or MFD front wheel drive), courtesy of Case, IH; plaque and belt buckle, courtesy of Am-Pac; $500 cash award, courtesy of Dodge Trucks; and $300 gift certificate to Grainger Industrial Supply, courtesy of Grainger. The YF&R contest winner will also represent Texas at the American Farm Bureau Federation national contest in Tampa, Fla., in January 2003. The two runners-up receive complimentary use of a 2003 Dodge Quad Cab pickup for a year, courtesy of Dodge; plaque and belt buckle, courtesy of Am-Pac; and a $200 gift certificate, courtesy of Grainger.
Discussion MeetThe Discussion Meet is an opportunity for young producers to discuss issues of importance to agriculture. The contest, a leadership training and self-improvement tool, is simply the presentation of well thought-out ideas for the purpose of collective problem-solving. The Discussion Meet winner will receive one year's use of a Kubota M Series tractor (45-65 horsepower) with a front end loader (two wheel or front wheel assist, courtesy of Kubota; an Arctic Cat 500 4X4, courtesy of Southern Farm Bureau Life; a $500 cash award from Dodge; $300 gift certificate from Grainger; and an expense paid trip to compete in the national contest in Tampa, Fla. The three finalists each receive a $200 gift certificate from Grainger and a plaque.
Excellence in AgricultureThis contest is designed for individuals involved in agriculture, but do not make the majority of their living from an operation they own. They should be actively contributing through their involvement in Farm Bureau and in agriculture/agribusiness. The state winner will receive one year's use of a 2003 Quad Cab pickup, courtesy of Dodge. The two runners-up will receive a $200 gift certificate from Grainger Industrial Supply. In addition, Grainger is awarding a $100 gift certificate to anyone who enters any of the three contests. Entry deadline for the Outstanding YF&R Contest and Excellence in Agriculture Contest is Sept. 6.
