According to wire reports, Robert Zoellick, the U.S. trade representative, has said greater market access for agriculture must be part of the draft framework for World Trade Organization negotiations. Zoellick said the United States would not accept a deal to put the round on track, simply for "the sake of a deal."
The United States has offered to make significant cuts in farm subsidies, provided that other countries cut their own subsidies and open their markets for trade.
The WTO General Council is meeting in Geneva to hash out a proposed compromise on the draft framework, with the goal of setting the stage for actual negotiations on reducing barriers to trade.
