For more than 35 years, Dr. Ernie Davis has served as Texas' leading beef marketing economist, monitoring and forecasting beef trends and prices. While beef prices have been the highest he has seen in his career, Davis has decided to retire at a time when the beef industry is at its peak.
Davis, who was first hired as an assistant Extension agent for Comanche County in 1962, has received every major award given by the Texas A&M University System, including the Regents Fellow Service Award in 2000. The award is given in recognition of outstanding service and commitment to Texas agriculture and beyond.
Davis plans to use his marketing skills even after retirement: he and a partner plan to form Ag Connection, a livestock auditing, appraisal and consulting firm.
"We will be doing consulting, auditing and stocking rate appraisal," he said. "Companies such as Wal-Mart and McDonald's are wanting to make sure (quality and safety standard) practices are being conducted on the ranch. We will be doing those audits."
