Laying groundwork for a successful session...

This fall is an important time for laying the groundwork for a successful Legislative Session next spring. This is the time to focus on Farm Bureau policies, communicate with political candidates, engage in the campaigns and develop an effective strategy for the session ahead. As with a successful wheat harvest, much of the work needs to be done now in the fall in preparation for next spring's growing season and harvest.

Texas Farm Bureau policy is grass-roots driven and takes place at the local county conventions and the state convention in December. This allows the policy book to accurately reflect the interests of Farm Bureau members in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture and rural Texas. Carefully thought-out and crafted policies provide the organization the best chance for success in addressing these issues in the give-and-take atmosphere of the Capitol.

The campaign season is now upon us and the candidates are more accessible and receptive to input at this time than any other. As the candidates make the rounds of campaign events and county Farm Bureau conventions, be prepared to inform them of our positions. Also, take careful note of their commitments in order to hold them accountable during the session. While it is rarely productive to be antagonistic or play "Gotcha," it is appropriate for candidates to state their positions, follow through with actions and communicate the results. Use the campaign stump not only as a place to hear the platform and positions of candidates, but to provide feedback and input as well.

It is important to be involved in the political process—certainly by voting, but by active support or opposition to candidates as well. Recognizing and rewarding candidates by contributing time, money or effort will go a long way towards establishing a relationship of communication and trust. Failing to be involved in the process enables those with opposing interests to influence the process and develop the relationships. Rest assured, if you are not involved in the process, someone else is—and they do not have your best interest in mind.

Texas Farm Bureau will use the upcoming conventions and board meetings to finalize the strategy and priorities for the Legislative Session. Included will be the need for active involvement of the county leaders. One of Farm Bureau's greatest strengths is the ability to mobilize grass-roots involvement in a number of Legislative Districts across the state. Combined with direct Austin office visits, testimony before the committees and an effective lobby effort, Farm Bureau will be well prepared to address the opportunities and challenges the Session provides.

In order to promote agriculture and rural Texas, invest time and effort into Farm Bureau policies, the candidates, campaigns and the upcoming session. The strength and effectiveness of a statewide organization devoted to such a worthy cause depends upon this involvement. We can then enjoy the fruits of our labor as we begin to make preparations for another season—and another session.
