Three Texans on Ag committee

Three Texans—all endorsed by Texas Farm Bureau AGFUND (Texas Farm Bureau Friends of Agriculture political action committee)—will serve on the Agriculture Committee during the 109th Congress. They are: Dist. 19 Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-Lubbock), former Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo), District 28, and U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Midland), District 11.

"We are pleased that Texas farmers and ranchers will have good representation on the committee as talks begin on a new farm bill," said Texas Farm Bureau Legislative Director Steve Pringle. "We feel good knowing that Texas producers will have a seat at the table as the new farm bill unfolds, the animal identification system is debated, and agricultural trade issues arise."

Pringle noted that Congressman Conaway, an accountant, represents 36 Big Country and Hill Country counties, where agriculture and energy production are the primary economic activities. He said Cuellar, an attorney and child of migrant farm workers, understands production agriculture.

"During his tenure in the Texas House (1987-2001), Rep. Cuellar maintained a close relationship with agricultural leaders in his district," said Pringle, adding: "We are confident that all three men will be looking out for the interests of rural Texans."
