A coalition consisting of 70 mainly environmental groups has sent a collective letter asking local public television stations to not air "America's Heartland," a new series sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Federation, Monsanto and five major commodity organizations. Farm Bureau became involved with the show because the programs promise to put a face on farm families and give them a voice to reach the general public.
Even without seeing a single episode, the protesting coalition claims the 20-episode series, set to begin airing this fall, will ignore the plight of small farmers, encourage consumers to think that corporate farming is appropriate and ignore forces causing problems in rural America.
