March 7 is rapidly approaching and the primary election season is in full swing. In fact, early voting begins on
Feb. 21. Now is a time when the strength of Texas Farm Bureauour membershipshould be felt. In some areas of the state,
our organization is hard at work to elect agriculture-friendly candidates to new offices.
For example, in the race for HD 54, veterinarian and cow-calf operator Jimmie Don Aycock is running for an open
seat. Dr. Aycock would be a great friend for Texas Farm Bureau. In the race to replace Sen. Ken Armbrister, State Rep.
Glenn Hegara fifth generation farmer and a proven agricultural leaderis trying to move up into the Senate.
A few of our good friends may be in trouble. State Rep. David Swinford from Dumas has a very tough opponent, a
school board member recruited by the education establishment to try and unseat incumbents who want real education reform.
Rep. Swinford's record on the priority issues of the Texas Farm Bureau is outstanding. It would be devastating to lose
a leader on agricultural issues of Rep. Swinford's stature.
Our members can have a great impact in these races by putting up signs, organizing "Meet the Candidate" forums
and offering whatever help the candidates need. Call the Waco or Austin office and we can get you in contact with
the appropriate campaign persons. The AGFUND Board of Directors is making endorsements in all contested primary races
at press time. The purpose of this great organization is to exercise grassroots political influence to benefit
Texas agriculture. The upcoming election is one of those moments where Texas Farm Bureau should fulfill its purpose. |
