Youth leaders sought
for Angelo conference

High school juniors and seniors will want to participate in the popular Texas Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference (formerly known as the Citizenship Seminar), scheduled for June 12-16 at Angelo State University in San Angelo.

Don't miss this opportunity to obtain a better understanding of our American heritage and the capitalistic, private enterprise system that has made the U.S. the greatest of all nations.

Eligible students, who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in August 2006, are selected by their county Farm Bureaus. They must possess good character and the desire to enhance their leadership skills. The high school students should be in the upper 30 percent of their class scholastically. Students who have attended previous Citizenship Seminars are not eligible unless they have been selected as a junior counselor.

The topics of free enterprise, constitutional government, leadership, goal setting, family, self-awareness and others will be explored and discussed during the week-long seminar. The ultimate goal is to help these young adults incorporate the above mentioned traits in their daily living, and for them to share this information with others.

A student does not have to be a Farm Bureau member to attend the seminar, but must become a member to compete in the Free Enterprise Speech Contest.

The contest begins with giving five local speeches (between four and six minutes) on free enterprise. This enables the entrant to be eligible for the district contest.

The Free Enterprise Speech contest scholarships at the state level include $4,000 for the winner, $2,500 for the runner-up, $1,500 each for four finalists, and $1,000 each for 13 district winners.

The deadline for applications is May 5. Contact your county Farm Bureau office for details.
