Youth
Activities
Calhoun County Farm Bureau is actively involved in youth activities
in our community. We know that these children are our future. Calhoun
CFB also provides training to help our elementary teachers tell agriculture's
story.
Sometime this spring, we plan to make donations to the FFA Chapter and
the County 4-H so the money benefits a number of young people involved
in county fairs.
In May, we present a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior. Applications
are available at the FB office or at Calhoun High School.
During July or August, we present a Continuing Education Scholarship
to a student already in college. We understand there is a need for scholarships
during the latter years of education, also.
We provide a $1,000 donation and resource people to help with the Ag
in the Classroom Day for all third graders in the county. We bus
them to the cotton gin, have 5-9 stations for each one to visit, feed
them hot dogs, chips, cookies, drinks. Last year, more than 340 students
participated in this event. We also provide Ag in the Classroom materials
and supplies to the local schools. Click
here to see photographs of past Ag Days.
Not only do we sponsor children to Ag in the Classroom events, we also
provide Inservice Training for third grade teachers. TFB's Education
Coordinator Tad Duncan teaches this two-hour class. Call the county office
for information on this year's training.
To help teach our young people about agriculture, we plan to sponsor two
or three teachers to the Summer Ag Institute for Elementary Teachers
which provides hands-on workshops; field trips and tours; lesson ideas and
activities for the classroom; resource material about agriculture; three
hours of graduate credit; TEA Environmental Education Credit (TEEAC); and
45 clock hours of Continuing Professional Education. The institute will
be held June 18-22. Please call the county office for more information. Deadline for applications is April 20.
This year's annual Youth Leadership Conference will be held June 11-15. Our
hopes are to sponsor two students to this week-long seminar where students
will learn about our Free Enterprise System, gain leadership skills and
make friendships which will last a lifetime! Deadline for applications is April 30.
